Learning Skills
Learning skills are essential competencies that empower individuals to engage effectively in educational and training environments. These skills encompass a range of abilities that facilitate learning and the application of knowledge across various contexts. People often assume that innate cleverness and intelligence equals the ability to organise learning; however, this is not always the case. The ability to organise one’s time and learning can be challenging, particularly for students with high intelligence.

Using the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), Crossroads Education explicitly teaches learning skills in the same manner as one would teach any other knowledge or skill, in a way that is not taught at school or university. The Crossroads Education approach to learning skills goes beyond study skills; it is about students learning how to learn independently and autonomously. The Crossroads Education learning coaches work with individual learners to develop personalised strategies that enhance their learning journey and promote accountability.

Key Components of Learning Skills include:
-
Engagement: This involves actively participating in learning activities, asking questions, and seeking clarification to deepen understanding.
-
Self-management: Individuals demonstrate the ability to set goals, manage time effectively, and reflect on their learning processes to enhance outcomes.
-
Problem-solving: Learning skills include the capacity to analyse situations, identify problems, and develop strategies to address challenges in a systematic way.
-
Adaptability: Being open to new ideas and approaches is crucial. Being adaptable enables learners to adjust their strategies and methods in response to changing circumstances or feedback.
-
Collaboration: Learning often occurs in group settings, and effective communication and teamwork are vital for sharing ideas, negotiating solutions, and achieving common goals.
-
Critical thinking: This involves evaluating information and arguments, making reasoned judgments, and applying logic to make informed decisions.
Developing strong learning skills not only enhances educational outcomes but also prepares individuals for lifelong learning and adaptability in a rapidly changing world. These skills are foundational for personal and professional development, enabling learners to navigate challenges and seize opportunities throughout their lives. The Crossroads Education approach to learning skills is different from traditional study skills and the learning offered in school or university. The focus on developing general learning skills and social habits such as organisation and time management means this program is relevant for NDIS clients.
